Carol Baker

I have thirty years’ experience in working with a wide range of issues such as depression or low mood, anxiety, work stress, relationship problems, self-esteem, anger management, work issues and bereavement.

I see counselling/psychotherapy as a process of working together to explore and manage experiences and feelings that are causing difficulties in your life. My role is to engage with you in this exploration in a way that is supportive, respectful and non-judgemental. Careful discussion can lead to a greater understanding of the underlying causes of your distress and help you to find ways forward. As a therapist I pay close attention to the significance of early experience which may have shaped patterns of thinking , feeling and behaving - patterns which you may not be fully aware of.

In life, we sometimes find that we repeat the same negative experiences. For example we may keep getting into relationships in which we feel rejected or unheard. Or we exhaust ourselves in trying to keep everyone else happy but feel no-one is looking after us. Or perhaps we feel undeserving of love and success and so deprive ourselves of happiness.

A couple may unconsciously repeat the dynamic of their parents' relationship or they may have unrealistic expectations of each other or themselves.. Once this is understood there is a greater chance of living more constructively together.

Coming to understand our unhelpful patterns and beliefs can provide relief and the opportunity for change.

A very significant aspect of therapy is the relationship with the therapist. This is a unique relationship in which you can discuss honestly all aspects of your life and feelings without worrying that you will hurt or offend someone who is part of your everyday life. It is important that you feel able to trust your therapist. This can take time – particularly for people who may not have had good early experiences of being able to trust.

Many people say they are happier, more confident and more accepting of themselves and others as result of therapy.

I offer both short term counselling for specific issues and longer term psychotherapy for more deep seated problems.

I have a Postgraduate Diploma in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and have been a tutor and group facilitator on Leicester University counselling courses. I have experience in higher education and the voluntary sector as counsellor, clinical supervisor, and have been Chair of the Leicester Counselling Centre.

I am a senior accredited and registered counsellor /psychotherapist with BACP ( British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy).

I am also a qualified practitioner in Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). This is a branch of energy psychology which can be helpful in finding relief from issues such as trauma, anxiety or self-limiting beliefs.
